Registration & Stamp Duty

The following is provided as a guide only, as every State and Territory has a different approach to the provision of concessions for Registration, Stamp Duty, Compulsory Third Party Insurance and the procedure for processing wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

Some States have clear cut policies, while other states have quite complex conditions to be met. Variations range from degree of disability, pension threshold, vehicle modifications or age in the case of minors. Likewise every State has its own approach to treatment of what is commonly referred to as an "Engineer's Report", registration procedures and inspection requirements for modified vehicles.

Websites of some State registration authorities set out concessions in a lucid manner but you may wish to call your local Customer Service office for clarification. Click on the map to go to the website for your State.

Points to remember when applying for concessions:

  • Originals of proof of entitlement or "Evidence of Identity" must be provided to registration authorities. This means your full Birth Certificate (if required), pension card, driving Licence, Senior's card etc must be originals as copies are no longer accepted.
  • An adult person (including a person with disabilities) is not required to have ever held a driving licence for a vehicle to be registered in their name, although where no licence exists, Evidence of Identity requirements will apply.
  • In some cases modified vehicles may be registered in the name of a parent or guardian of a disabled person who is a minor and still qualify for concessions despite being too young to have a vehicle registered in their name.
  • One vehicle only may be registered at concessional rate in an individual's name at any given time - even if the type of concession varies.
